I love coffee. I don’t feel guilty about how much I love coffee. Not in the slightest. It’s my calming agent. The rock I need when the seas turn stormy.
There is nothing that gets me started for the day like my morning cups of coffee, and the cup I have in the last hour of work, or right after I finish work for the day, eases me into a calm and productive evening.
I feel a smile coming on just thinking about my favorite beverage.
And now, I have a couple more reasons to love it.
In the past couple of months, I've read articles about the virtues of coffee drinking and the repellent effects it seems to have on dementia, Parkinson's disease, depression (of which I can personally attest to), Type 2 diabetes, and several other conditions. As Jennifer LaRue Huget posted on The Checkup in the Washington Post this morning, it also appears to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterine lining), by 25 percent for those drinking four or more cups a day. This seems to hold true for those who drink decaffeinated coffee as well.
I was not aware until reading this post that endometrial cancer will affect an estimated 46,470 women this year, and it will potentially lead to the deaths of 8,120 women. I was shocked when I read that, because it is not a cancer you hear much about, which is probably also why the death toll is so high.
So, if you're a four-cup-a-day drinker like I am, you have one more reason to be thankful. For those tea-only drinkers that look down their noses at us less sophisticated (in their eyes) coffee drinkers, I think these facts provide a little extra food for thought.
The next time you pour your morning cup of hot whatever, consider what it may or may not be doing to benefit you. And, in the meantime, I'm going to go get another cup of my beloved coffee.
