Tips for running beginners:

As we transition from summer into fall, the cooler weather is a great time to break into running, if you're looking for a way to step up your exercise routine.

- Start light! Don't try to run for 20 minutes your first time out, especially if you are not used to intensive exercise. Try 5 or 10 minutes and go from there. (And, always check with your doctor before you start any intense exercise routine.)
- Stretching before a run isn't usually necessary. In fact, it can inhibit good performance. Try a few minutes walking first to warm up.
- Getting your knees up won't get you very far. It is better to concentrate on getting your heels up and back. You will have a more efficient stride if imagine yourself doing leg curls as you jog.
- Start slow. Don't worry about how fast anyone around you is going. If they want to burn themselves out in 5 minutes, that's their business. You'll feel a larger sense of accomplishment if you start slow and gradually extend how long you can run than if you try to beat everyone else on the track for 2 minutes.
