Mumford and Sons = cheap Dave Matthews Band

I'm going to say upfront that this is not the post for anyone who likes the band Mumford & Sons.

I seriously dislike Mumford & Sons. I make a kind of hissing sound whenever they come on the radio or are played at the gym. I don't want to literally say that I hate them, but it's pretty close.

So, obviously, I was horrified to hear this morning that Mumford & Sons won Album of the Year at the Grammy's last night. I didn't watch the Grammy's, one, because we don't have cable (we cut the cord a couple years ago and haven't looked back), and two, because I had better things to do (sorry, Grammy's). So, I had to get my rundown with my usual dose of NPR this morning.
Why do I dislike them so much? Because the first time I heard one of their singles, I thought, hey, this is kind of like Dave Matthews. Cool.

Then, the next time I heard that single, I thought, hey, wait, it is REALLY like Dave Matthews, if Dave Matthews didn't know how to write a good song. And then the severe dislike began.

Mumford & Sons have that coffehouse/open mic night feel with their emphasis on the acoustic guitar riffs that smacks of Dave Matthews Band's band, and even their pseudo-soulful lyrics evoke something like the deep emotion that DMB's music has always been fluent with.

But, the more I hear M & S, the more I realize, single after single, that there's just something missing. Oh, yeah, Dave Matthews and the rest of the band...

I was glad, however, that one of my favorite bands, The Black Keys, took home two Grammy's, including Best Rock Album for El Camino. I LOVE that CD, and the songs from it feature prominently on my playlists.
